Upneeq

Meet Upneeq®

Upneeq® (Oxymetazoline Ophthalmology) is a new non-surgical, prescription eye drop for the treatment of drooping caused by ptosis. If you have ptosis or drooping eyelids, you know that it can be both frustrating and embarrassing. You may feel like you look tired all the time, even when you’re well-rested. Ptosis can be caused by a variety of factors, including aging, injury, and certain medical conditions.

  1. CONCERN: Droopy or tired-looking eyes due to ptosis.
  2. TREATMENT TIME: Each dose of Upneeq® was shown to be effective for at least six hours after application.
  3. RESULTS: Upneeq® causes the upper eyelid to contract, subtly making the eyes appear wider and more alert.

What is Upneeq®?

Upneeq® is a prescription eye drop that is applied directly to the eye. It works by temporarily paralyzing the muscles that cause ptosis, allowing your eyelids to return to their normal position. Upneeq is a great temporary option for ptosis patients who need or want surgery but are not prepared to have a surgical eyelid lift.

In some cases, this prescription can be used to temporarily relieve mild eye redness and discomfort caused by minor irritants or blepharitis (a drooping eyelid over one or both eyes) and may be used by adults and children who are at least 13. However, Upneeq® is not a substitute for eyelid surgery, which offers lasting results that treat both genetic and acquired ptosis.

How Does Upneeq® Work?

Upneeq® is a quick and easy in-office treatment that requires no surgery or recovery time. The active ingredient oxymetazoline shortens and tightens the eyelid muscles by contraction. This allows doctors to treat patients who can more easily acquire ptosis with less invasive treatments, allowing the eyelid to return to its normal position and improving the appearance of droopy eyelids.

Upneeq® is generally well-tolerated, but you should not use oxymetazoline ophthalmic if you are allergic to it. Please tell your SKIN FIVE specialist if you have ever had:

  • High or low blood pressure
  • Heart problems
  • Sjögren’s syndrome
  • Blood circulation problems
  • Glaucoma
  • Eye injury or infection

Certain medical conditions may not make you an ideal candidate for Upneeq®, which can affect blood pressure or metabolism and interfere with certain medications. These include beta-blockers, antihypertensives, cardiac glycosides, and monoamine oxidase inhibitors.

What Are the Benefits of Upneeq®?

There are many benefits to Upneeq®. In addition to improving your appearance, Upneeq® can also help relieve the symptoms of ptosis, such as fatigue and headaches. Because it’s non-surgical, Upneeq® is much less expensive than surgery.

In clinical studies, Upneeq® helped patients with acquired ptosis, often on the first day of treatment! In clinical studies, many patients improved in as little as 2 hours. Such results include:

  • 87.8% of patients had some form of improvement
  • 40.8% of patients had at least a 50% improvement on Day 14
  • In one study, some patients saw improvement as fast as 5 minutes after their dose

Patients should expect multiple treatments. Your SKIN FIVE specialist will determine the number of treatments required based on your needs and aesthetic goals.

What You Can Expect From Your Session

This treatment is performed at home, but it can also be performed in-office. During your session, your SKIN FIVE provider will walk you through the application process. To avoid any adverse reactions or potential eye infections, it’s important that you don’t touch the applicator tip directly with your fingers or any other surface after it has contacted your eye area.

If you wear contact lenses, remove them before using eye drops. Wait at least 15 minutes before changing contact lenses. Tilt your head back to look up and pull down your lower eyelid to create a bag. Hold the dropper directly over your eye and put a drop into the sachet. Look down and gently close your eyes and place your finger on the corner of your eye (near your nose). Gently press for 1-2 minutes before opening your eyes. This will prevent the medicine from leaking out. Avoid blinking or rubbing your eyes. If the drip does not get into your eye, try again. If you use this medicine in both eyes, repeat these steps for the other eye.

Discard the disposable container after applying the daily dose of oxymetazoline. Do not store unused medicine in single-use containers.
